Wesley's journal informs us that he first visited Chapel-en-­le-Frith to preach on Sunday, May 28th 1745. He last preached there on Monday, April 3rd 1786. The first chapel building was erected in 1780. It was a square building, with a gallery on three sides. One relic survives - a stone dated 1780 incorporated into the present building (fixed to the back wall).

There was a pulpit bible inscribed "This book was bought of Mr. William Paul of Macclesfield, cost 11/-, which sum was raised by a few disposed and charitable people, and is given for the use of the Methodist Preachers at their Preaching House Chapel, Town End. 1st December 1781" This bible must have been used by Wesley himself but is now missing.

The present chapel was built in 1872 on the exact site of the old one. The foundation stones were laid by Mr. Holland of Macclesfield, Mr. Turnbull of Southport, Mr. Barber, Mr. Eli Atkin and Norman Bennett who was a personal friend of John Wesley.

In 1885 a considerable piece of land was purchased by the side of the chapel on which was erected a large Manse. It is no longer serving as such, but still survives.

The memorials have been copied verbatim including any epitaphs and have been typed as such, except where the symbol / indicates a new line in the original inscription. After each inscription there is an indication of the form in which the memorial exists.

The index of names refers to the reference number designated to each memorial, and all names, villages, houses, counties etc. mentioned on each memorial are also indexed and listed separately.
