CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH PARISH COUNCIL

PARTNERSHIPS

Members of Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council believe that they can achieve a great deal by working in partnership with other councils and organisations.

THE REGENERATION PARTNERSHIP

The Chapel Regeneration Partnership grew out of the Parish Council’s Operation Facelift and was established in 1997, with the Parish Council, High Peak Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Chapel Traders, Equity Housing Group and Chapel Amenity Society as partners. In 2002, funding was obtained from the East Midlands Development Agency for a six month “Health Check” of the town’s well being in terms of economic vitality, physical appearance, tourism potential, level of services and leisure facilities. That resulted in the appointment of a Market Town Project Manager (Helen Pakpahan) and a ten-year development plan.

Achievements to date:

  • street planters

  • hanging baskets

  • tourist information boards

  • improvements to surfaces and street furniture throughout the conservation area

  • community newsletter

  • community banner project

  • new skate board and BMX park

  • industrial estate on the perimeter of the town

  • extensive up-take of Heritage Economic Regeneration Grants for restoration
    of traditional façades, roofs etc.

Some up-coming projects:

  • touch screen information board.
  • town web site, now the Parish Council site.
  • community bus service.
  • development of Peak Forest Tramway into a walking and cycling route.
  • improvement of town “gateways.”
  • Second Conservation Area in the Town End area.
  • Britain in Bloom application.
  • Leaflet to promote tourism and local shops.
  • Youth arts project.
  • “Swim Bus” to pools in nearby towns.
  • development of school holiday child care provision.

P.F.I. PROJECT

Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council has joined forces with Derbyshire County Council, Chapel High School, Babcock and Brown and Chapel Community Leisure Committee to secure funding for leisure facility to be shared between High School pupils and the general community. This is the first P.F.I. project in the country to result in a joint school and leisure facility (opened 2003). The Centre is managed by CCL (City Centre Leisure) who also made a substantial capital contribution to the facility.

Facilities in the leisure centre include:

  • all-weather pitches

  • tennis courts

  • multi-gymnasium

  • large sports hall

  • bar

  • café

  • community area

MILLENNIUM TOPOGRAPH PROJECT

The Parish Council has joined forces with High Peak Borough Council, Chapel Amenity society and the National Trust to finance a topograph on the summit of Eccles Pike.

The topograph consists of a 20ft circumference bronze ring with a sculptured depiction by Amanda Cirillo of all the landmarks to be seen in the 360 degree panorama visible from this viewpoint.

Children from Chapel Primary School designed motifs representing species indigenous to the High Peak.
