Dove Holes Village Carnival & Fete Day

Saturday 23rd August 2008

“Putting Dove Holes back on the social map!”

There is now a website at www.doveholes.net for everyone to sign up for email newsletters to keep up to date with whats happening in Dove Holes. Please visit soon and sign up.  This has kindly been created and hosted by designedbydove.co.uk – your local home for website design and hosting.  This site will eventually be a catchall site for all Dove Holes residents , businesses and groups to get details of events and news to the Village, and further afield.  However for the next few months we will use it mainly to advertise and organise the Dove Carnival.

The procession will begin at about 1pm now from Katies Diner, and continue along Halsteads to the end of the village.   We have already had 12 promises for floats, including the Dove Brass Band, The Robinson’s Steam Wagon and various banger cars.  BUT, we have room for more!  Do You know any group who may want to enter a float/wagon or group of walkers? Get them in touch with us as soon as possible – lets face it the more the merrier!

Stalls – games – competitions – snacks and drinks – fairground rides – during the afternoon at the Community Ground there are already tombolas, soft toy games, Pet Show, Welly Wanging, hook a frog, rocket launch, Tug of War, Stalls and Face painting

Any group who wants to hold a stall, or run a game etc, needs to get in touch as soon as possible to book a spot.

Carnival King – The King (and nominations are coming in thick and fast) will be treated as such all day.     He will be carried at the head of the procession on his throne, and will be judging various competitions through the day, and as stated, will also be deciding how to spend his “Kings Ransom” in the Village. You can have your input into this on the form below, and if you haven’t made a nomination yet do so quickly……..

Competitions – There will be various competitions, the main ones being :-  BEST FANCY DRESS WALKER / BEST FLOAT / BEST COMMERCIAL VEHICLE / KING’S CHOICE BEST OVERALL / BEST DECORATED HOUSE IN VILLAGE (to be announced on the day - apply below so we don’t miss you!) / DOG SHOW (best in show-best 6 legs- waggiest tail- most obedient) sponsored by Trophy pet foods.

There will be a prize in each category chosen by the King and the committee.

Carboot –  we will hold a carboot sale on Sunday 17th Aug from 7AM – noon on the hardcore at the Community Ground.   Cost will be £5 per car and proceeds will go to the Carnival fund.

Contact either Sally on 07834922133 or Simon on 07718269703 or email si@simonaxford.com for further information about anything to do with the Carnival.

Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band
(established 1882)

The Town Band meets every Tuesday at the bandroom on Willow Drive, Chapel-en-le-Frith from 8.00 to 9.30 pm.  The junior band, SK23 Brass, meets on Saturdays at the bandroom from 12 noon to 1 pm.  In the spring it is hoped to form a beginners’ band, Brass Monkeys, who will also meet on Saturdays.  Private tuition on a one-to-one basis takes place through the week.  New players are always welcome – please contact Aidan Howgate on 01298 214459.

The band has a long history in the town, and has recently celebrated its 125th anniversary with a concert at Chapel-en-le-Frith Methodist Church.  Its current aims are to encourage the musical development of its players, with particular emphasis on the junior section; to take part in a regional contest in March 2008; and to raise funds for more instruments and the refurbishment of the band room.

For more information, please contact Ave Spencer  by email at

The brass band has been part of the cultural life of Chapel-en-le-Frith probably for at least 150 years since the middle of the 19th Century when the standardisation of instrumentation was adopted by groups of brass musicians in the towns and villages of the North of England. In later years, the brass band movement swept across the British Isles and eventually to many countries around the world where it thrives today

Groups of musicians, playing brass, reed and string instruments, provided music for services in Churches and at community social functions in Chapel-en-le-Frith in the earlier centuries. However, it is believed that a particular group of brass players which had provided music at Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Church formed themselves into the Town Band in 1882 when their services were no longer required at the church following the installation of the organ.

Brass bands were hugely popular sources of entertainment in the 19th century and it is often said that there were some 40,000 in existence in Britain around 1900. In the early part of the 20th century, a number of bands were active in and around Chapel-en-le-Frith, including the Town Band and the Volunteer Band, and there were also bands in Castleton, Chinley and Bugsworth, as well as Whaley Bridge, Dove Holes, Peak Dale and Fairfield. There was great rivalry between the bands and there are stories of competitions between them, which involved playing while marching up the steep cobbled incline of Church Brow.

In 2004 the Band, under the musical direction of Aidan Howgate, a graduate of University of Salford music faculty, introduced a Cool2playbrass education project aimed at strengthening membership and encouraging young people to take up brass playing. A junior band called SK23 has been formed along with a learners group called Brass Monkeys. Already young learners have graduated to the senior band.
